Principal Investigator Research Support (PIRS)
Tenure & Tenure Track faculty eligible for PIRS
Research Support is calculated based on indirect cost recovery
expenditures on sponsored research contracts in the prior
fiscal year and distributed annually on or about September of
the next fiscal year (i.e. FY13 research support will be
distributed in Sept 2012 based on FY12 actual indirect cost
recovery expenses). The full year distribution is 3
percent of the indirect cost recovery.
Research Support funding is for infrastructure and research
development support that cannot be funded on grants. Examples include items such as
computers, proposal writing, publishing, and strategic
Support will be transferred into individual PI research support
Funding will be available for expenditures for 3 years. At the end of that time, any
remaining balance will revert to the Institute.
Mechanics of distribution:
Distribution for FY12, done in the Spring Semester, will be
based on fiscal year 2011 actual indirect cost
expenditures. For FY12 only, this distribution will
be 1.5% of indirect cost recovery expenditures in FY11.
Distribution for FY13, done on 9/1/2012, will be based on
fiscal year 2012 actual indirect cost expenditures. For FY13 on, this distribution will
be 3% of indirect cost recovery expenditures in FY12.
Policy will remain in place for three fiscal years. At the end of the period, the
utilization and impact of the funds will be reviewed for
effectiveness. A determination to continue the
policy will be made.
